27th May is a record day for Solar Power

It is often said that electricity from solar power will, at best, generate a negligible amount of energy. But,according to Norbert Allnoch, Director of the Institute of the Renewable Energy Industry (IWR) in Münster, this was spectacularly disproved on Saturday (May 26th) when solar electricity was able to provide more than 50% of Germany’s needs. Of course, this was on a warm weekend, when demand for power was a little lower than during the week, but solar energy still managed to provide one third of all electricity around midday on Friday.

Back in England, we were also generating a lot of solar power on Saturday. The Scheme Secretariat has a 39kWp solar array on its South building. This also reached a new peak power output on Saturday, and produced a total of 271kWh of solar energy on the day, proving that solar panels are a great way to generate clean energy. We sell any surplus solar electricity that we don’t need in our offices to one of the Green Energy Supply Certification Scheme members (but we’re not allowed to say which one!)

However if you don’t have a South facing roof, or can’t afford to install solar panels on your home, you can still benefit from electricity that has been fully matched with renewable electricity by signing up to the Scheme.
